What Happened
Two people were hospitalized in serious condition early Sunday, August 30, 2026, after the car they were in ran off 48th Avenue in Zeeland Township, struck an embankment and rolled over, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies were called to 48th Avenue near Felch Street, west of Hudsonville, shortly after 4:15 a.m., according to WWMT. Investigators said a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta was traveling southbound on 48th Avenue when the driver ran off the right side of the road. The car hit an embankment and rolled “an unknown amount of times,” the sheriff’s office said in the release reported by WWMT and the Ottawa News Network.
The driver, a 20-year-old woman from Byron Center, and her passenger, a 21-year-old man from Allendale, were both taken to a hospital in serious condition. At least one of the two was ejected from the car. The sheriff’s office said it had not yet determined whether both occupants were thrown from the vehicle or whether one got out on their own after the crash. Neither was wearing a seat belt, according to WWMT’s report. Their names were not released.
48th Avenue was closed between Felch Street and Byron Road while the sheriff’s Traffic Services unit reconstructed the crash and crews cleared the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Services unit is handling the reconstruction. In a rollover of this kind, investigators typically document the path the car took after leaving the pavement, the point where it struck the embankment, and the roll distance and final rest position, all of which help estimate speed. They also examine seat and belt evidence to determine who was seated where and whether occupants were ejected — a question the sheriff’s office said was still open on Sunday.
Deputies did not say whether speed, distraction, fatigue or impairment were suspected. The crash happened shortly after 4 a.m. on a Sunday, an hour when single-vehicle run-off-road crashes are common statewide. Because the occupants were hospitalized, additional interviews are likely once their condition allows.

48th Avenue is a two-lane north-south county road through rural Zeeland Township, running between Byron Road and Felch Street west of Hudsonville and south of I-196. The corridor is lined with farm fields, drainage ditches and grade changes at the roadside — the kind of embankment terrain that can launch a vehicle into a roll when it leaves the pavement at speed.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office has investigated several serious crashes on the 48th Avenue corridor in recent years, including a 2023 intersection crash at 48th and Byron Road that critically injured a driver. Deputies did not describe road surface, lighting or weather conditions at the time of Sunday’s crash.
