What Happened
An Elkton-area man died early Sunday morning when his car left Elkton Road, overturned and caught fire in Chandler Township, according to the Huron County Sheriff’s Office. The crash was reported shortly before 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 16, on Elkton Road near the Filion Road intersection in Michigan’s Thumb.
Sheriff Kelly Hanson said the preliminary investigation indicates the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling southbound when it entered the east ditch north of the intersection, came out of the ditch, crossed into the west ditch south of the intersection, flipped and caught fire, ABC12 reported. The sheriff’s office said the car was heavily damaged by both the impact and the fire.
Firefighters from the Oliver Township Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to reach the driver, who was found dead and badly burned inside the vehicle, WNEM reported. The man’s name has not been released; officials said next-of-kin notification involves family in Mexico. Deputies said the man worked as a farm hand and is believed to have been on his way to work at the time of the crash.
