What Happened
A 48-year-old Flat Rock man died and an 83-year-old Monroe man was seriously injured in a head-on collision on N. Telegraph Road, also known as US-24, northeast of Hurd Road in Frenchtown Township on Monday morning, August 24, 2026, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office as reported by the Country Herald and The Toledo Blade.
The sheriff’s office said the crash was reported at about 10:04 a.m. According to investigators’ preliminary account, a gray 2010 Ford Escape driven by Aaron L. Heiss of Flat Rock crossed the centerline while navigating a curve and collided with a red 2026 Cadillac OPTIQ driven by John C. Taylor of Monroe, which was traveling in the opposite direction. Heiss died at the scene; Taylor was taken to Corewell Health Trenton Hospital in serious condition, per the sheriff’s office. Why the Escape crossed the centerline has not been determined, and the investigation is ongoing.
Investigators said both drivers were wearing seat belts and that airbags deployed in both vehicles. The sheriff’s office also said intoxication “is not considered a factor in the collision.” Frenchtown Township firefighters, Monroe Community Ambulance and MDOT assisted at the scene.
