The Berrien County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate. In fatal crashes, investigators typically document the scene and gather statements, and findings are generally released only after that work is complete, so details can change.
The Legal Picture
Q1: After a serious crash, whose insurance pays for an injured person's medical care?
Under Michigan's no-fault system, an injured person's own personal injury protection (PIP) coverage, or coverage available through a household policy, typically pays medical expenses first regardless of who caused the crash. Our overview of Michigan no-fault insurance (https://www.truckcrash.com/michigan-no-fault-insurance/) explains how the priority rules work.
Q2: Can more than one party be responsible when someone is hurt in a crash?
Sometimes. Depending on the facts, responsibility can involve more than one person or entity, and Michigan applies comparative fault, which can reduce a claim by the injured person's own share of responsibility. Every situation turns on its own evidence.
Q3: Are there deadlines for claims after a crash?
Yes. Michigan sets firm deadlines for no-fault benefits and for injury or wrongful-death lawsuits, and some are shorter than people expect. The general rule is to learn the deadlines that apply to you early, while evidence is fresh.
Nothing here assumes fault by anyone involved in this crash. Every crash is different, and the answers above are general information about Michigan law, not legal advice about this incident.
