What Happened
A 22-year-old truck driver from Chicago died Wednesday morning when the semi-truck he was driving rolled over and caught fire on eastbound I-94 near Watervliet in Berrien County. According to WWMT News Channel 3, the crash happened shortly before 10:30 a.m. on September 2 near the Watervliet exit in Watervliet Township.
The semi, which was hauling bottled water, rolled over and came to rest partially in the median while also laying across the roadway, blocking both eastbound lanes, WWMT reported. The cab caught fire and, according to FOX 17, was fully engulfed by the time first responders arrived. Responders found the driver trapped in the cab; the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office said he died at the scene. His name had not been released in initial reports. No hazardous materials were involved, according to WWMT.
Eastbound I-94 was closed for approximately seven hours while crews put out the fire, recovered the wreckage, and investigated, with traffic diverted around the scene for much of the day.
