What Happened

Three children were hospitalized Sunday afternoon after the minibike they were riding together collided with a car near Jackson Street and Memphis Avenue in Warren, according to Fox 2 Detroit and WXYZ.

Neighbor Don Coleman told WXYZ he heard screaming and ran toward the scene, where he found three children lying in the street with varying degrees of injuries. He said he helped one child with a suspected leg injury until emergency responders arrived. Fox 2 reported that neighbors described broken bones and serious abrasions and that the minibike was caught beneath the car and dragged.

The children's conditions and the car driver's status had not been released, and no citations or charges had been announced in the reports reviewed.

Reporting: Fox 2 Detroit and WXYZ, with information from the Warren Police Department.

The Investigation: What Happens Next

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Warren Police Department. Fox 2 Detroit quoted Warren Police Lt. John Gajewski as saying that minibikes are typically smaller, lower to the ground and gasoline-powered, and are not allowed on sidewalks or streets.

The Legal Picture

When a child is hurt in a crash involving a motor vehicle, Michigan's no-fault system generally governs how medical bills are paid, and who is responsible can depend on the facts an investigation establishes. Claims involving minors also carry special rules, including court approval of some settlements. This general information is not legal advice and makes no assumptions about how this crash occurred.

This Stretch of Road

WXYZ reported that neighbors in the area have raised ongoing concerns about speeding on residential side streets, where they said drivers cut through to avoid traffic on nearby roads. Warren police stressed that minibikes are difficult for drivers to see because they sit low to the ground.
